What’s happening in my body?

You probably already knew about your baby, but it will be official the moment your gynaecologist hands you your pregnancy record. Not only is all relevant information entered in your pregnancy record, you also find out which examination you are due to have and when. According to maternity guidelines, you should generally be examined every four weeks until the 32nd week of pregnancy and then every two weeks after that. Naturally, you should also be examined if you are experiencing any difficulties or pain or if your gynaecologist considers it to be necessary.

How is my unborn baby developing?

Three ultrasound examinations, known as scans, are scheduled in the maternity guidelines. These examinations do not pose any risk to the health of the expectant mother or her unborn baby.
If the gynaecologist detects any abnormalities during the pregnancy, further specialised examinations can provide clarification and, if necessary, help to make a more accurate diagnosis.

Your first scan appointment is between the 8th and 12th week of pregnancy. Using a vaginal ultrasound probe, your gynaecologist can see amniotic sack implanted into the womb and the embryonic structures inside of it.  During ultrasound examination, you will be able to see the heart beats and the first movements of your child. You can recognize embryo`s head, trunk and even tiny extremities.
At this point in your pregnancy, your gynaecologist can tell you whether the calculated delivery date is correct or needs to be adjusted.

Your second ultrasound examination comes in the 19th to 22nd week of your pregnancy. Using abdominal approach, your doctor examines how the child has continued to develop, whether the body structures and outlines appear normal or not, and if your baby is a boy or a girl. The placental position and the quantity of amniotic fluid are also checked during this scan. If there are medical reasons or suspected abnormality, detailed fetal scan (advanced ultrasound examination) will be offered at this point .

The third and final prescribed ultrasound examination takes place between the 29th and 32nd weeks of pregnancy.
The doctor controls baby's growth, and how its physical development looks, i.e. whether it will be a big or a rather delicate one.
The baby´s position, placental morphology and amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby will be documented as well.
